Dietrich Mateschitz, co-owner of Red Bull, passed away at the age of 78. The Austrian billionaire had been battling a long-term illness and was crucial to Red Bull's participation in Formula One.

Prior to qualifying for Sunday's United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of Americas in Austin, his death was made known to the Red Bull staff.

Mateschitz was the impetus behind the creation of the energy drink that rose to the top of the global market.

He established a Formula 1 team that has grown to be one of the sport's dominant forces using the fortune that resulted from that.
