At least 19 people have died as a result of the crash of a Tanzanian passenger plane into Lake Victoria while it was trying to land in the lakeside town of Bukoba.

Operator Precision Air reports that of the 43 passengers, 24 were able to survive.

In the beginning, the two pilots were alive and were able to communicate with local authorities from the cockpit, but the prime minister claims they may have since passed away.

Near the end of the Bukoba airport runway, the plane crashed close to the water.

Some of the passengers still inside the aircraft were able to be rescued by rescuers who could wade through the water.
