Turkey, Feb 6: A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Turkey and Syria at dawn on Monday, killing more than 300 people and destroying many buildings, as residents of Egypt, Lebanon and Cyprus felt. At least 237 people were killed in government-controlled areas in Syria as a result of the earthquake, which had its epicenter in southeastern Turkey, while a medical source in opposition-held areas near the border with Turkey reported eight deaths.

In Turkey, at least 76 people died in seven provinces, according to a preliminary toll issued by AFAD, amid expectations that it will rise much more as a result of the massive destruction of a large number of residential buildings in major cities.
