Jeddah: Saudi Arabia is making rapid progress in arresting a large number of people living in the country in violation of residency, employment and border laws. A report released by the Saudi Interior Ministry on Saturday said more than 16,000 people had been arrested for violating residency, employment and border laws during joint raids in the last week of August.

In the seven days from August 26 to September 1, a total of 16,600 offenders were arrested during raids across the country. Of these, 5,800 are in violation of the Iqama Act. Only 1455 people were arrested for violating labor laws. About 9,000 people were arrested for non-compliance with border laws.

The Interior Ministry said 849 people had been arrested for trying to infiltrate Saudi Arabia illegally, while 19 others had been arrested for trying to cross the border illegally. About 98 percent of those trying to infiltrate Saudi Arabia are citizens of Yemen and Ethiopia. Eleven people were arrested on charges of concealing the offenders and providing them with accommodation, transport and employment, the report said.

A recent Interior Ministry report has revealed that 10,000 of the arrested offenders have already been deported from Saudi Arabia after legal proceedings and that they are in contact with their country's diplomatic missions or adjusting their travel tickets for the travel documents of others.
