MONKEYPOX VIRUS DETECTED IN THREE MORE NATIONS

  • 25/05/2022

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is the first Gulf country to report a case of monkeypox.

On Tuesday, the Czech Republic and Slovenia also confirmed their first cases, joining 18 other countries in detecting the virus outside of Africa.

This figure is anticipated to climb much more, although experts say the overall risk to the general public remains minimal.

The virus has caused outbreaks in Europe, Australia, and the United States.

A fever and rash are common symptoms, but the infection is usually minor.

In the UAE, health officials announced a case had been detected in a traveller who had recently visited west Africa and is now receiving medical treatment.

Authorities there say they are "fully prepared" to handle any outbreak, adding that early surveillance protocols for detecting the disease were in place.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says the virus can be contained with the right response in countries outside of Africa where it is not usually detected.
