MODERN SLAVERY SHOOTS UP BY 10 MILLION IN FIVE YEARS

According to a new UN report, modern slavery is becoming a bigger problem as a result of a combination of armed conflict, climate change, and the worldwide pandemic.

According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), 50 million people, or one in every 150 people alive, are subjected to forced labour or forced marriages.

That is an increase of almost 10 million from five years ago.

The ILO called it "shocking" that things were getting worse.

Guy Ryder, its director general, stated that "nothing can justify the persistence of this fundamental violation of human rights."

"We are aware of what must be done; all hands must be on deck. Civil society, employers' groups, labour unions, and regular people all have important roles to play."
