AS TYPHOON NANMADOL APPROACHES, THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE FLRD JAPAN

In Japan, hundreds of thousands of people have been urged to leave their homes because of "unprecedented" storm risks.

On Sunday, Typhoon Nanmadol is anticipated to make landfall on Kyushu Island.

Winds could gust as high as 270 km/h (168 mph), and some regions could receive 500 mm (20 inches) of rain in a single day.

There is a "special alert" in effect for Kyushu, with flood and landslide warnings. Flights and train services have been cancelled.

With a population of over 13 million, Kyushu is the southernmost of the four islands that make up the main body of Japan.

This is the first special alert ever issued outside the Okinawa Prefecture, which consists of the smaller, remote islands in the East China Sea, the Japan Times reports.

Once the typhoon makes landfall, it is expected to turn north-east and move up through central Japan towards Tokyo.

It is also expected to maintain much of its strength even after making landfall.
