Diphtheria has killed over 600 individuals, predominantly children, in Nigeria since its outbreak began on December 2022, according to official sources. With an estimated 14,000 cases, the current outbreak is significantly more severe than the previous one, which was reported in 2011 with 98 cases.

The epicentre of the current outbreak is Kano State, located in the north of the country, which has seen more than 500 fatalities, although the number of active cases has recently decreased.
