Kuwait's Revised Traffic Law to Take Effect on April 22, 2025

  • 24/01/2025

Kuwait's Interior Ministry has announced that a new traffic law, which significantly increases penalties for severe offenses, has been published in the official gazette, Kuwait Al-Youm. The law will come into effect 90 days later, on April 22, 2025. Until then, existing penalties and fines will remain in place. Notably, this new legislation replaces a 48-year-old law, marking a substantial overhaul of the country's traffic regulations.

Under the new law, fines range from KD 15 for parking in prohibited areas - a significant increase from the current KD 5 fine - to a maximum of KD 5,000 for causing serious injury or death while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The ministry emphasized that financial settlements for offenses not sent to court will be determined by the ministry itself. This development is expected to bring Kuwait's traffic laws more in line with modern safety standards and reflect the country's commitment to improving road safety.
