Bahrain Expands Taxi Sector Localization, Impacting Expatriate Workers

  • 20/09/2025

The Bahraini government has intensified its drive toward nationalization by introducing new measures in the taxi industry, a sector where expatriates make up a large portion of the workforce. The Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications announced that up to three local drivers, including family members of the vehicle owner, can now operate a single taxi. This adjustment is expected to create more opportunities for Bahraini citizens.

While the policy is seen as a step toward empowering nationals and meeting rising demand in the transport sector, it poses a significant challenge for expatriates, many of whom rely on taxi jobs for their livelihood. The new rule is likely to reduce expatriate participation in the sector, forcing many to seek alternative employment or return to their home countries.

Fatima Al Dayin, Undersecretary of Land Transport and Postal Affairs, emphasized that the reform not only supports local employment but also aims to improve passenger services for residents and tourists. She urged all drivers to maintain high service standards and adhere to regulations to ensure safe and reliable transport.
