In response to a significant rise in fraudulent SMS scams, Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has issued new directives for mobile operators. These guidelines were developed by a joint working group formed by the TRA and the operators to tackle the growing threat of online safety issues impacting mobile users. The new measures provide clear procedures and technical requirements to help operators detect, prevent, and mitigate deceptive SMS activity.
The directives mandate that operators implement several key measures to better protect consumers. These include provisions for user education, establishing robust reporting systems for suspicious messages, and ensuring full compliance with Bahrain's regulatory and data protection laws. The move comes after increasing complaints about scam SMSes, which pose a major and escalating threat to users in the kingdom.
The TRA's Director of Consumer and Communications emphasized that this collaborative effort reflects a shared commitment to safeguarding Bahrain's consumers. He stated that by working together, the TRA and mobile operators aim to ensure the public can use telecom services with greater confidence and security, effectively creating a safer digital environment for everyone.
