Dubai: Voice calling through apps including WhatsApp and Skype is now available to some smartphone users in the UAE. The news agency Reuters reported on Wednesday. Some people who have seen the news and checked on their own phones have made it clear that they can make WhatsApp calls. They said the sound quality was excellent. Services operating under the Voice over Internet Protocol, including WhatsApp, are regulated in the UAE.

Consumers are relying on other apps that can be used for a fee instead. Meanwhile, Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Skype for Business were available in the country for online learning and work.

Earlier, the head of the UAE government's cyber security division said talks were underway to lift the ban on some voice-over-the-internet systems, including WhatsApp and FaceTime.

He told the GCC Cyber Security Conference last December that the ban on WhatsApp calls had been lifted for a limited time on a trial basis and that some steps were being taken in this regard. No other details were available.
