RARE PENGUIN MAKES 3000 KM JOURNEY TO NEW ZEALAND

A penguin has washed up on New Zealand's shores, at least 3,000 kilometres (1,864 miles) from its natural habitat in Antarctica.

The Adélie penguin, now affectionately known as Pingu by locals, was discovered looking lost on the coast.

Harry Singh, the local who discovered him, said he initially mistook him for a "soft toy."

It is only the third time an Adélie penguin has been discovered on the coast of New Zealand.

Mr Singh and his wife discovered the penguin after a long day of work on the beach at Birdlings Flat, a settlement south of Christchurch.

"I thought it was a soft toy at first, but then the penguin moved his head, and I realised it was real," Mr Singh told the BBC.

The penguin appeared lost and alone in footage posted on Mr Singh's Facebook page.
