THE RUSSIAN ANTI-SATELLITE MISSILE TEST HAS SPARKED OUTRAGE

The United States has condemned Russia for carrying out a "dangerous and irresponsible" missile test, which it claims endangered the crew of the International Space Station (ISS).

The test blew up one of Russia's own satellites, resulting in debris that forced the ISS crew to take refuge in capsules.

There are currently seven crew members on board the station: four Americans, one German, and two Russians.

The space station orbits at a height of about 420 kilometres (260 miles).

"Earlier today, the Russian Federation recklessly conducted a destructive satellite test of a direct ascent anti-satellite missile against one of its own satellites," said US State Department spokesman Ned Price at a press conference.

"The test has so far produced over 1,500 pieces of trackable orbital debris and hundreds of thousands of smaller pieces of orbital debris, which now threaten the interests of all nations."

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson expressed outrage over the incident.
