BORDERS WERE CLOSED AS A RESULT OF THE NEW SOUTH AFRICA VARIANT

  • 26/11/2021

Following the discovery of a new coronavirus variant in South Africa earlier this week, more countries are tightening their travel restrictions.

The United Kingdom, Singapore, and Japan are among the countries enacting stricter quarantine measures and banning flights from South Africa and its neighbours.

The EU is considering banning flights from the region across the board.

Scientists say they still have a lot to learn about the variant, but they're concerned about it. The World Health Organization (WHO) has stated that determining the impact of the new variant will take a few weeks while scientists work to determine how transmissible it is.

The variant is distinct from the others that have surfaced thus far. It is the most heavily mutated version yet, according to scientists, which means vaccines based on the original Wuhan strain may not be as effective.

The new variant is currently known as B.1.1.529 and has yet to be given a more memorable name, such as Delta or Beta. On Friday, the WHO will name it and say whether it is a variant of concern or just a variant of interest.
