Twitter has appointed Parag Agrawal as CEO, succeeding Jack Dorsey, the embattled social media company announced on Monday. Agrawal has pledged to "reshape the future of public conversation."

The IIT Bombay graduate ascends to one of the most powerful roles in the social media universe, which is under fire from various political forces around the world for its ability to control discourses while also serving as a conduit for disinformation at times.

He will have to navigate the political minefields of social media while also correcting the company's faltering financial performance.

Agrawal joins a small group of CEOs of Indian origin who lead technology companies in the United States. Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and its parent company Alphabet, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, IBM's Arvind Krishna, and Adobe's Shantanu Narayen are among them.
