CORONA CASES ARE ON THE RISE IN AFRICA FOLLOWING THE DISCOVERY OF OMICRON

The number of new corona cases in South Africa has doubled in a single day. The new variant Omicron was discovered last week. This was followed by a sharp rise in corona cases here.

On Tuesday, 4373 cases were reported and by Wednesday, the number of cases had risen to 8561. Experts say there will be an increase in corona cases following the new virus variant.

Corona cases are expected to double or triple in the coming days. Virologist Dr Nixie Gumed Moletsey says a sudden increase in corona cases is expected in South Africa alone.

Corona cases rose sharply in a country where only 200 cases were reported in the first weeks of November. In mid-November, there was an extraordinary increase in corona cases. This was followed by the discovery of the Omicron variant.

In June and July, there was a similar increase in corona cases. More than 90,000 people have already died from corona in South Africa.

However, experts say it is not yet clear whether the new variant, Omicron, has contributed to the sharp rise in current cases. Genome sequencing tests have been intensified in labs in South Africa and Botswana.
