General Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 others were killed in an Indian Air Force chopper crash

 Delhi : After a military chopper crashed in Tamil Nadu, killing 13 people on board, General Bipin Rawat, India's first Chief of Defence Staff, and his wife died today. An Air Force Group Captain, the only survivor, is being treated for severe burns.

"With deep regret, it has now been ascertained that Gen Bipin Rawat, Mrs Madhulika Rawat and 11 other persons on board have died in the unfortunate accident," the Indian Air Force (IAF) tweeted.

"Group Captain Varun Singh" is the individual being treated at the military hospital in Wellington, according to the Air Force.
General Rawat was on board a Mi-17 V5 helicopter when it "came with an accident near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu," according to the Indian Air Force.
The helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from the Air Force base in Sulur, Coimbatore, at 11.45 a.m. for Wellington, Nilgiri Hills.
The General was on his way to Wellington's Defence Services Staff College to speak to teachers and students.
