There will be no long journeys for Afghan women without mahram

KABUL – Taleban authorities in Afghanistan said yesterday that women wishing to travel long distances should not be offered road transport unless accompanied by a close male relative (mahram). The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice issued guidance that drew condemnation from human rights activists and called on vehicle owners to refuse rides to women who did not wear headscarves.

The move comes after the Taleban barred many women in public-sector jobs from returning to work following their Aug. 15 seizure of power, and as girls continue to be largely excluded from state secondary schooling. It also comes as hardline Islamists attempt to project a moderate image internationally in order to re-establish aid suspended when the previous government imploded during the final stages of a US military withdrawal.
