ABU DHABI:  UAE issued its first civil marriage license to a non-Muslim couple yesterday, according to state media, as the Gulf country seeks to maintain its competitive edge in the region.
The United Arab Emirates, where foreigners make up 90 percent of the approximately 10-million-strong population, has been amending its laws in order to position itself as a modernizing force in an otherwise conservative region.

According to the official WAM news agency, a Canadian couple became the first to marry under a new law governing the personal status of non-Muslims in the Emirati capital of Abu Dhabi.
The move "contributes to Abu Dhabi's position as a world-leading destination for skills and expertise from around the world," according to WAM.
