The risk posed by the Omicron variant is still "very high," according to the World Health Organization (WHO), after COVID-19 case numbers increased by 11% globally last week.

The WHO said in its COVID weekly epidemiological update on Wednesday that Omicron has surpassed the previously dominant Delta variant in several countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States. The update came after a number of countries recently reported record-high infection rates.
