New York: In a new version of the coin revealed by the US Mint, poet and activist Maya Angelou becomes the first Black woman to appear on the currency.

Angelou, author of "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," will be the first person to be honoured by the American Women Quarters Program, which was enacted into law in January 2021.

According to a press announcement from the US Mint, "the first coins" containing Angelou's likeness on the American quarter, a 25-cent piece, "have begun shipping."
