Australia has matched its warmest day on record, with temperatures reaching 50.7 degrees Celsius in a remote coastal town (123.26F). On Thursday, the temperature in Onslow, Western Australia, tied a South Australian record established in 1962. With temperatures expected to increase somewhat on Friday, Onslow and the neighbouring areas may set new records.

It comes after huge bushfires were reported in Western Australia last month. A fire near Margaret River charred almost 6,000 hectares of land, causing evacuations. Onslow equaled the record at 14:26 local time on Thursday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology (22:26 GMT). The average temperature in Onslow at this time of year, according to local media, is 36.5 degrees Celsius. On Thursday, temperatures in two additional towns, Mardie and Roebourne, exceeded 50 degrees Celsius.
