A severe winter storm dumped heavy snow and ice on areas of the United States and Canada, putting more than 80 million people under weather alert. More than 145,000 people in certain southern states are without electricity, and dozens of flights have been cancelled. Virginia, Georgia, North and South Carolina, and the District of Columbia have all proclaimed states of emergency. The National Weather Service (NWS) in the United States predicts more than a foot (30cm) of snow in some regions.
