In a crackdown on alcohol, Nigerian religious police have burned over four million bottles of beer. Bulldozers smashed the bottles into the ground in Kano, Nigeria, in front of ecstatic crowds who chanted "Allahu Akbar" (God is Great). The primarily Muslim city is located in one of several northern Nigerian states that follow Sharia law, which prohibits the consumption of alcohol. The drinks were seized from trucks headed south, which is predominantly Christian.

The confiscated booze and drugs are regularly destroyed by Shariah police, known as Hisbah, but Wednesday's haul was the greatest yet in an increasing drive.

Officials claim that as part of a war on intoxicants, bulldozers rolled over 3,873,163 bottles of beer and other sorts of alcohol in a broad open field. According to villagers who saw, officials then set fire to the crushed remains and let the blaze burn all night.
