CHINA SAID IT WILL NOT RENEW PASSPORTS FOR NON-ESSENTIAL TRAVEL

While the international Covid-19 pandemic situation remains serious and cross-border travel creates "huge security risks," China's National Immigration Administration said it will not renew passports for non-essential travel.

In a statement posted on social media, the administration stated that it will "usually provide passports" to people who need to travel overseas for study, job, or business. However, rumours that it will give passport renewals to anyone who want to travel overseas for pleasure are untrue, according to the administration.

To reduce the possibility of the virus being brought in from abroad and spreading domestically, China has strengthened controls on people' cross-border travel.
It has halted the issuance of new common passports to people who plan to travel abroad for non-essential reasons.
