MOROCCO PLANS TO INSPECTS ALL WELLS AFTER RAYAN TRAGEDY

After a trapped young child died in a gallant but ultimately unsuccessful rescue attempt last week, Moroccan authorities have decided to investigate all abandoned wells across the nation.

Rayan's struggle at the bottom of a 32m (104ft) deep shaft captivated Moroccans and people all over the world. Abdelaziz Zerouali, a water ministry official, said the survey was meant to avoid the disaster from happening again.

Those who dug wells in violation of the rules, he warned, would have to pay to have them repaired. He went on to say that over 1,000 Moroccans are already imprisoned each year for illegal drilling.
