As the city confronts a surge in coronavirus infections, Hong Kong's government has mandated mandatory testing for all of its 7.5 million residents. Residents will be subjected to three rounds of testing beginning in mid-March, according to Chief Executive Carrie Lam. Schools will be out of session early for the summer. The area is attempting to follow China's "zero Covid" policy, but the extremely contagious Omicron variety has overloaded its hospitals, testing and quarantine facilities, and other infrastructure. While the rest of the world is learning to live with the disease, China's aim is to eradicate it through early diagnosis, extensive contact tracing, and rigorous quarantine and travel restrictions.
