MAN WHO WAS GIVEN GENETICALLY MODIFIED PIG HEART DIED

The world's first person to receive a heart transplant from a genetically engineered pig has died. David Bennett, who had fatal cardiac condition, lived for two months after the procedure in the United States.

However, his condition began to deteriorate few days ago, according to his doctors in Baltimore, and the 57-year-old died on March 8. Mr Bennett was aware of the hazards associated with the surgery, admitting before to the procedure that it was "a shot in the dark."

Doctors at the University of Maryland Medical Center were granted a special dispensation by the US medical regulator to carry out the procedure, on the basis that Mr Bennett - who was ineligible for a human transplant - would otherwise have died. He had already been bedridden for six weeks leading up to the surgery, attached to a machine which was keeping him alive.
