AFTER SUPPRESSING THE LATEST COVID EPIDEMIC, HONG KONG'S LEADER INTENDS TO REOPEN THE CITY

Carrie Lam, the leader of Hong Kong, said on Thursday that the moment had not come to lift a restriction on flights from nine countries, including the United States and the United Kingdom, with intentions to reopen the city only once the government had controlled a raging coronavirus outbreak.

According to the Our World in Data magazine, the global financial hub has some of the most harsh measures in place to battle a surge in coronavirus outbreaks that has seen the city suffer the highest deaths globally per million inhabitants in the week ending March 7.

Total infections have risen to around 600,000, with over 2,800 deaths, the majority occurring in the last two weeks. Since 2020, the Chinese territory's borders have virtually been locked, with few planes able to land and passengers barred from passing.
