INSTAGRAM HAS BEEN BANNED IN RUSSIA DUE TO 'CALLS TO VIOLENCE' IN UKRAINE

According to Roskomnadzor, Russia's national media watchdog, Instagram will be prohibited in the country owing to "calls for violence" against Russian military. Instagram owner Meta claimed it will let its users in some countries advocate for violence against Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian servicemen. It will temporarily allow some aggressive posts that normally violate its standards, such as "death to the Russian invaders." It does, however, state that it will not tolerate demands for violence against Russian civilians. In response to Meta's policy move, Russia urged the US to put an end to the social media giant's "extremist operations."

Russian Prosecutor General's Office called for a criminal inquiry against Meta on Friday, citing Russian propaganda and extremism legislation. According to the agency, the Prosecutor General's Office has urged Roskomnadzor, the official media watchdog, to ban access to Instagram due to the "distribution of information materials containing appeals to carry out violent actions against Russians, particularly servicemen." Roskomnadzor announced on March 4 that it was restricting Facebook access in Russia due to "discrimination" against Russian media.

Meta owns Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. However, WhatsApp is not currently being blocked in Russia as it is a messaging platform rather than a social network.
