GERMANY WILL PURCHASE F-35 FIGHTER JETS AS PART OF MILITARY SPENDING SPREE

Germany aims to buy up to 35 US-made F-35 fighter jets and 15 Eurofighter jets as part of a significant push to modernise the armed forces in reaction to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

According to media sources corroborated by the source, Lockheed Martin's F-35 fighters will help replace Germany's decades-old Tornado force. Tornados are the sole aircraft capable of transporting US nuclear warheads stationed in Germany as part of NATO deterrence.

Lockheed's F-35 stealth fighters are considered the most advanced combat aircraft in the world, and their distinctive design and coating make them difficult to spot by enemy radar.

The additional Eurofighter fighters that Germany intends to buy, manufactured by a consortium that includes Airbus, will apparently be used for various duties such as electronic warfare and escort missions.

Last month, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz committed to invest 100 billion euros ($112 billion) on the country's chronically underfunded Bundeswehr.
The increase in investment is a huge reversal for Europe's largest economy, upending its strategy of keeping a modest military image, owing in part to guilt over World War II.
