CHINA SHUTS DOWN THE IPHONE AND THE TECH CAPITAL OF SHENZHEN, AS COVID CASES SELL OUT

China has put the 17.5 million residents of Shenzhen, in the southern metropolis of Guangdong, on lockdown for at least a week, in an effort to stem the spread of the Covid-19 virus, a decision that might cause disruption and production delays in the vital technology hub and port.

According to a government announcement, the lockdown would be accompanied by three rounds of city-wide, mass testing after viral infections nearly doubled nationwide to about 3,400. The ban, which was announced on Sunday, comes after previous limits on Shenzhen's central business district and will run until March 20.

All bus and metro lines were shut down, and all businesses were closed save those that provided vital services. Employees were told that if they could, they should work from home. Residents will be prohibited from leaving Shenzhen, which is home to Huawei Technologies Co. and Tencent Holdings Ltd., as well as one of China's busiest ports, save in very limited circumstances.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Apple Inc.'s principal producer of the iPhone and other products, has its China headquarters and a key manufacturing plant in the city.
