A significant earthquake has been registered in north-east Japan, causing power outages in two million residences. The tremor was reported at magnitude 7.3 and is said to have reached 6-plus on Japan's shaking intensity scale in certain regions, making it too strong for people to stand. Residents of Fukushima, Miyagi, and Yamagata prefectures have been warned to brace themselves for aftershocks. The quake occurred at 23:36 (14:36 GMT), according to the US Geological Survey. A tsunami warning for one-metre (3.3-foot) waves has also been issued for areas of the north-east coast.
