Finland has been crowned the world's happiest country for the fifth year in a row, according to an annual UN-sponsored survey. Afghanistan was rated the world's unhappiest country, closely followed by Lebanon.

The most recent list was produced prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Bulgaria, Romania, and Serbia experienced the greatest increases in happiness. Lebanon, Venezuela, and Afghanistan saw the greatest drops in the World Happiness Index, which was issued on Friday. Lebanon, which is in the midst of an economic collapse, has dropped to second from last on the index of 146 countries, just below Zimbabwe.

War-scared Afghanistan, which was already at the bottom of the list last year, has seen its humanitarian catastrophe worsen since the Taliban retook power in August following the withdrawal of US-led troops.
