NIGERIA CHURCH CRUSH LEAVES 31 DEAD

Police in Nigeria have initiated an inquiry after 31 persons were killed in a crush in the southern city of Port Harcourt.

It happened on Saturday morning in a sports field where a church was handing out meals to the underprivileged, some of whom had waited there overnight.

According to authorities, the gathering "grew boisterous and unruly," and organisers failed to calm the situation.

Women and children made up a large proportion of those killed in the crush.
