JAPAN RECORDS BIGGEST EVER POPULATION DROP IN 2021

  • 03/06/2022

Japan achieved a record low number of births in 2021, resulting in the largest natural population fall in history, according to government figures released on Friday. Last year, there were 811,604 births, the fewest in health ministry data dating back to 1899. Deaths increased to 1,439,809, resulting in a population loss of 628,205.

The overall fertility rate (the average number of children born to a woman during her lifetime) fell for the sixth year in a row, to 1.3. Japan has one of the world's fastest ageing populations, and the country's restricted borders during the Covid-19 pandemic has expedited the country's labor decline.
