COVID-19 PATIENTS FACE SERIOUS KIDNEY CONCERNS, ACCORDING TO AUSTRALIAN EXPERTS

According to Australian experts, millions of COVID-19 patients worldwide may go untreated for possibly fatal renal illness.

Acute kidney damage (AKI) occurs when the organ fails to filter waste from the blood, which can result in debilitating illness or even death. Typically, the disease is caused by complications from another chronic illness.

Marina Wainstein, a doctorate candidate and renal specialist at the University of Queensland (UQ), stated that current data revealed that approximately 20% of COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital developed AKI, rising to almost 40% for those in intensive care.

Wainstein, speaking about her findings, which were published in the online journal PLOS Medicine and made public, stated that the AKI figures could be twice as great.
