A US military destroyer escort that sank during World War II has been discovered as the deepest wreckage yet identified.

In October 1944, the USS Samuel B. Roberts was sunk during the Battle off Samar in the Philippines. 6,895 metres (4.28 miles) of water surround it.

The "Sammy B" was found by Texas billionaire and explorer Victor Vescovo, who is the owner of a deep-diving submarine.

The ship is renowned for its valiant last struggle against the Japanese.

Outnumbered and outgunned, it managed to contain and frustrate several enemy ships before finally going down.

Of the Samuel B Roberts' 224-man crew, 89 were killed. The 120 survivors had to cling to life rafts for 50 hours before being rescued.
