UAE Faces Rising Obesity Crisis: Alarming Projections for 2050

  • 03/03/2025

A recent study published in The Lancet predicts a sharp rise in obesity rates in the UAE over the next 25 years, with nearly 95% of adults expected to be overweight or obese by 2050. This increase is particularly concerning among young people, where obesity rates are projected to surge from 62% in 2021 to 81% by mid-century. The report highlights the UAE, along with neighboring Gulf nations, as having some of the highest obesity rates in the world, largely due to sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy diets, and a lack of physical activity.

Health experts stress the importance of early intervention and proactive measures to combat obesity. They attribute the rising numbers to modern conveniences, excessive screen time, and reliance on processed foods. However, they also see this crisis as an opportunity to promote wellness initiatives, healthy eating habits, and increased physical activity. Medical professionals advocate for government-led strategies, such as public health campaigns, community fitness programs, and better access to nutritious food, to counteract the growing obesity epidemic.

The study also sheds light on the global obesity trend, revealing that more recent generations are gaining weight at a faster rate than their predecessors. By 2050, nearly 60% of the world’s population is expected to be overweight or obese, with the most significant increases in Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. The findings highlight the urgent need for comprehensive policies and lifestyle changes worldwide to mitigate the risks of obesity-related diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular conditions, and certain cancers.
