Kuwait’s aviation sector is undergoing a major transformation, with Acting Director General of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Duaij Al-Otaibi, confirming significant progress on key projects at Kuwait International Airport. These include a new control tower, a third runway, and the expansive Air Cargo City, which will accommodate over 77 giant cargo aircraft. Supporting infrastructure, such as power and fire stations, radar, and air navigation systems, is also nearing completion. Al-Otaibi announced plans to establish the Civil Aviation Authority, which will oversee airport and air navigation operations through private companies. He emphasized that these developments align with the country’s vision for a modernized aviation industry.

Al-Otaibi anticipates the new Kuwait International Airport will be operational by the last quarter of 2026, increasing passenger capacity from 16 million to 25 million annually, with a maximum capacity of 27 million. Infrastructure projects, including the reconstruction of central and eastern runways, will further enhance operations. Additionally, plans are under consideration for another airport in northern Kuwait, supporting the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port and Mutlaa City developments. He highlighted that the aviation sector is poised to become a key economic contributor, targeting 25% of Kuwait’s national income within the next decade.
