Kuwait: The Public Authority for Agriculture Affairs and Fish Resources has ordered the immediate and temporary suspension of operations at the livestock market in the Kabd area. The decision follows the detection of foot-and-mouth disease strain SAT1 on farms in Sulaibiya.
In an official communication to the Livestock Wealth Association in Kabd, the authority directed the market to halt all sales and purchases of livestock and to restrict the movement of animals in and out of the market until further notice.
A field visit by Al-Qabas revealed that the cattle section of the market was completely shut down, while the sheep section had minimal activity and few visitors. Vendors reported that the sudden closure, issued without prior warning, resulted in a significant drop in foot traffic throughout the day.
Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious viral infection affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, and goats. It causes fever and painful sores, posing serious health threats to livestock and leading to substantial economic losses.
The Agricultural Authority has not yet announced when the market will resume operations, stating that the closure will remain in effect until the situation is under control and further assessments are made.
