Dubai: Gopalan Chandran, a Malayali expatriate stranded in Bahrain for 42 years, has finally returned home to Kerala. His emotional homecoming was made possible through the intervention of the Delhi-based Pravasi Legal Cell (PLC), which advocates for Indians facing injustice abroad.
Chandran had traveled to Bahrain in 1983 in search of better job opportunities. However, after his employer’s death and the loss of his passport, he became stranded without documents. His story gained widespread attention after being featured on a Malayalam television program in 2020, where he also learned that his mother was still alive.
The Pravasi Legal Cell worked with the Indian Embassy and Bahrain's Immigration Department to gather the necessary documents and complete legal formalities for his return. After decades of struggle, Chandran was finally able to reunite with his 95-year-old mother and family.
Now staying with his elder brother Mohanan’s family, Chandran’s return marks the end of a long period of hardship. He expressed mixed emotions, noting, "Two generations have been born in my family, yet my life remains unchanged."
