Trump Announces 100% Tariff on Foreign Films, Cites Decline of U.S. Movie Industry

Washington: President Donald Trump on Sunday revealed plans to impose a 100% tariff on all films produced outside the United States, stating that the American film industry is "dying very fast." He argued that foreign governments are offering lucrative incentives to lure U.S. filmmakers and studios abroad, causing serious damage to Hollywood and the broader U.S. entertainment sector.

In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump said he had authorized the Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to initiate the tariff process immediately. This move is the latest in a series of aggressive trade measures by the Trump administration, which has drawn criticism both domestically and internationally.

"The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death," Trump wrote. "Hollywood, and many other areas within the U.S.A., are being devastated." He further claimed that the issue represents a national security threat.

The announcement comes in the wake of China’s decision to reduce imports of American films, amid escalating trade tensions. While the full impact of the proposed tariffs remains unclear, there was no mention of how the policy would affect television productions or streaming content, which have become major components of the global entertainment economy.
