North Korea’s 5,000-Ton Warship Capsizes During Launch; Kim Jong Un Blames ‘Criminal Negligence’

North Korea suffered a major embarrassment after its newest 5,000-ton warship capsized during a high-profile launch ceremony in Chongjin, reportedly attended by leader Kim Jong Un. The ship lost balance and cracked at the bottom due to a slip in the launching cradle, exposing serious technical failures. Satellite images now show the damaged vessel lying on its side, partially submerged and covered with blue cloth to conceal the extent of the damage.

Kim Jong Un publicly condemned the incident, calling it an act of “criminal negligence” and a major setback for the nation’s military ambitions. He harshly criticized the shipbuilding team and has reportedly demanded urgent repairs before the upcoming June plenary meeting of the ruling party. The failed launch is said to have left Kim politically embarrassed, especially as it happened under his direct watch.

A joint investigation by U.S. and South Korean intelligence agencies revealed that the use of a risky side-launch technique likely caused the ship’s failure. While North Korean media is downplaying the seriousness of the event, international observers suggest that severe punishment, including the death penalty, may be imposed on those responsible. The incident highlights the regime’s strict intolerance for failure, particularly when it involves military prestige.
