Kuwait City: The Interior Ministry is set to revoke ten thousands of foreigners' driving licenses. Authorities said they had begun proceedings to revoke more licenses. About 40,000 expatriates hold illegal driving licenses. Officials said many of them had obtained their licenses illegally and had taken their licenses while working in a post where the driving license had been issued earlier and did not return their licenses even after the post was changed. According to the ministry, 20,000 driving licenses have been issued to university students during study time alone. Most of them have completed their studies but have not been issued a driving license.

Foreigners with a salary of 600 dinars, a degree and two years of residency in Kuwait can apply for a driving license. The condition is that the driving license obtained while working in the posts provided by the government should be returned to the Department of Transport in case of transfer to other posts. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Transport is preparing to set up a special mechanism to issue licenses to foreigners. Sheikh Faisal Al Nawaf, Under Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, directed a study in this regard. Authorities are taking various measures to reduce traffic congestion, accidents, traffic violations and the use of obsolete vehicles on the country's roads.

The Home Ministry has directed the Traffic Department to link the data between the Traffic Department, Manpower and Residency Affairs to locate the canceled driving license. With this, the expatriate with the old and invalid license will have to hand over the license to renew the residence document.
