ENVIRONMENTAL LAW VIOLATION CASES SAW MAJOR INCREASE IN 2021 IN KUWAIT

Kuwait City: The number of cases involving environmental misdemeanours and felonies tripled in 2021, increasing from 571 to 1,760 in misdemeanours and doubling from 17 to 35 in felonies. According to a special statistic on the total reports of environmental cases (misdemeanours and felonies) registered in the Environmental Police Department over the last five years, a record number of 1,760 misdemeanour cases were registered last year, which is a significant increase from 571 in 2020, 537 in 2019, 264 in 2018, and 366 in 2017.


In terms of criminal cases, there were 35 last year, compared to 17 in 2020, 27 in 2019, 10 in 2018, and 34 in 2017. According to security sources, the Environmental Police Department is making significant efforts to dissuade recklessness and violations of environmental legislation both on land and at sea by dispatching a large number of police personnel throughout the country. This aided in the monitoring and eradication of numerous environmental infractions, which were documented as felonies and misdemeanours against hundreds of violators. The overall number of misdemeanour cases was 3,498, while the total number of felony cases was 123. Since the department's inception in 2017, all of these cases have been referred to the judiciary.
