KUWAITIZATION POLICY IS CAUSING A LOSS OF SKILLED EXPAT WORKERS

  • 28/01/2022

Kuwait City: According to an Economic Observer report, Kuwait has a demographic imbalance, with 3 million expats accounting for 70% of the country's 4.3 million inhabitants. The Kuwait government adopted a policy and a plan within a framework to eliminate the imbalance in 2018. The policy was accelerated in 2021, and it is estimated that by 2025, expats will be reduced by around 1.6 million.

The Kuwait government continues to follow its Kuwaitization programme, which implies that the number of expats in the country will remain a major issue in domestic politics for the foreseeable future. Because many expats hold top positions in firms, banks, and financial institutions, the Non-Oil Economy sector is likely to lose talented people.

The outflow of expats continues as a result of the pandemic scenario, as well as the government's Kuwaitization strategy and tightening immigration regulations. More than 18,000 foreigners were deported in 2021, while 257,000 expats permanently left the nation. There has been a labour shortage in the private sector, which relies on expats, and the difficulties in absorbing Kuwaiti employees in the public sector has jeopardised Kuwait's economic progress.
