ATTEMPT TO HALT THE 'PHENOMENON' OF RISING SUICIDES IN KUWAIT

Kuwait City: The Kuwaiti Sociologists Association launched the 'Your Life is Precious' effort on Monday to combat the growing trend of suicide in the country, particularly amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) on the occasion of the campaign's launch, Association President Abdullah Al-Radwan emphasised the importance of community awareness in combating this phenomena, stating that the initiative was launched in response to an increase in suicide cases. 


Al-Radwan emphasised the need of expanding community cooperation in order to fulfil the initiative's goals of limiting the escalation of this bad occurrence, saying that the organisation was fast to encourage government and civil entities to participate. He explained that the factors that contribute to an increase in suicides include psychological illnesses, social isolation, and a lack of religious faith, in addition to drug addiction and the dangers of video games. Concerning the implementation mechanism, he stated that the process of addressing this phenomenon and working to prevent it from occurring is carried out through a variety of methods, including communication with all embassies and the distribution of books in all languages to raise awareness about the risks of depression and other factors that lead to suicide. 

Al-Radwan stated that an advertising campaign and information about the programme will be distributed through social media channels, in addition to training courses with experienced social and psychological specialists. He emphasised the importance of seriously addressing this intrusive problem in full openness in order to find solutions to treat, remove, and deter similar phenomena, and he thanked the government and civic authorities who participated in this project.
