COVID 19: KUWAIT PROHIBITS IFTAR IN MOSQUES

Kuwait City: As a precaution against the spread of COVID-19, Kuwait has banned iftar dinners inside mosques during the forthcoming Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

According to Al Jarida, the Kuwaiti Ministry of Awqaf (Endowments) and Islamic Affairs has emphasised the ban in a circular that permits for the charitable distribution of pre-cooked meals outside mosques for individuals to eat at sunset when daily fasting ends.

According to the government, setting up Ramadan tents within the gates of mosques is prohibited for health reasons.

"The ministry will not be lenient in dealing with any breach of the circular issued for organisational and health reasons," Awqaf sources told the daily, adding that "the coronavirus ramifications are still hurting some sectors."

The ban on holding Ramadan tens near mosques aims to prevent crowds from congregating indoors, they added. "Despite the huge drop in daily infections and return to pre-pandemic activity," the sources claimed, COVID-19 and its variants still persist.

Earlier this month, Kuwaiti authorities said all mosques in the country will be back to normal as part of easing anti-virus curbs. Worshippers are no longer required to observe physical distancing in mosques.
